Areas of life that are less understood or difficult to identify are discussed by C.G. Jung as the shadow side: “To confront a person with his shadow is to show him his own light. Once one has experienced a few times what it is like to stand judgingly between the opposites, one begins to understand what is meant by the self. Anyone who perceives his shadow and his light simultaneously sees himself from two sides and thus gets in the middle.”
In therapy, the identification of the shadow is a delicate process. The therapist and patient become a working alliance that carefully identify and process these elements of the patient’s life. One of the phenomenal aspects of Jungian psychology has been the ability for patients to present material in session that leads to their further identification and processing of shadows.
