Association of Newfoundland Psychologists Commends Government's Efforts to Address Gambling Addictions.
St. John's, Newfoundland, The Association of Newfoundland Psychologists (ANP) would like to commend the government's efforts to address gambling addictions by reducing the number of video lottery terminals (VLT's) within this province, as announced in the recent Provincial Budget.
ANP is pleased at the increased awareness evidenced with regard to the role that VLT's have in gambling addictions and would like to further acknowledge the government's demonstration of social responsibility within this context, by its plans to decrease the number of VLT's.
ANP hopes that other mental health issues including gambling addictions will continue to be addressed in government efforts to improve the well-being of the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Association of Newfoundland Psychologists strongly supports the action taken in the recent Budget, and encourages the government to continue to address addictions and other mental health issues.

Association of Newfoundland Psychologists involved in Eastern Newfoundland Science and Technology Fair.
St. John's, Newfoundland, The Association of Newfoundland Psychologists (ANP) is pleased to have been part of this year's Science Fair for high-school students. The science fair is the Eastern Newfoundland Science and Technology Fair, an annual event, which brings together best and brightest Grade 7 - 12 science
students in Eastern Newfoundland. This year's Science Fair judge on behalf of ANP was psychologist Dave Jeans. The MUN Department of Psychology co-sponsored the awards and also provided a judge. Thirty-eight student presentations were judged. Most of the psychology projects were in the area of perception/cognition and many of the students mentioned that they had used first year university-level psychology textbooks to get their ideas. Three winning entries among Junior, Intermediate and Senior students were chosen for prizes, which involved a cash prize and engraved plaque.
Laura Ivany and Mary Winters at Booth Memorial High were the Senior prize winners. Their project was entitled "If You Don't Snooze, You'll Lose", which involved students completing cognitive tests during the morning, noon and late afternoon to measure the effect of fatigue and "body clocks" on performance, and number of hours of sleep was correlated with general student academic performance using a survey.
Allison Simms at St. Bonaventure's College was the Intermediate prize winner. Her project was entitled "Influences on Decisions to Diet", and a school-wide survey was conducted to investigate dieting habits and reasons for dieting, such as media influences and peer pressure for example.
Madeline Fitzpatrick and Emily Jameson at MacDonald Drive Junior High were the Junior prize winners. Their project was entitled "La Psychologie: Le Developement Du Langage", which had a dyslexia theme and involved university professors reading passages with and without spelling mistakes in order to measure differences in reading times, errors and comprehension. These students also won a trip to Vancouver to compete in the National Science Fair.
Overall, the Science Fair was felt to be a success and ANP is delighted to see the science of psychology given such a high profile by students. ANP looks forward to being involved in future Science Fairs.
